OSTEOARTHRITIS OF THE SPINE AND SHOULDER

An elderly patient over 85 years old presented with pain and Osteoarthritis of both shoulders. Left shoulder was worse. Radiating pain into the right C5/6 dermatome. Pain on the left side of the neck around the atlantal region. Pain at the base of spine. Constant.
Dizzyness, shaky hand. Gets a feeling of something in the hand.

A few TIA’s (TRANSIENT ISHAEMIC ATTACKS) over a 6 year period. Aphasia, confusion.

Accident 2011 December, hit head and sustained a sub dural haematoma, C/T scans aggravated condition, increased confusion, Dementia, gets tired, anxiety and emotional, nervous habit of scratching, picking the skin.

History of high blood pressure, which fluctuates on the low side. Gets uptight, worries, thinking of the past. Auditory hallucinations, more apparent after the fall.

Medication: Blood pressure, anticoagulants, anti depressants.

X-Rays showed osteoporosis and severe arthritic changes of the lumbar spine.

Nervous Breakdown after husband died a few years ago. Very lonely, withdrawn from the social.

Operations: Knee replacement. Hip replacement.

Due to the age and delicate nature of this patient, osteopathic treatment was successfully applied to relieve pain around the neck and shoulder region. Gentle mobilisation of the lumbar spine was also carried out to restore spinal mobility and drain swelling around the lumbo-sacral region.
